THE HISTORY OF PUAKEA BAY RANCH

The land here at Puakea Bay Ranch was settled by ancient Hawaiians many generations ago. Most of the community lived closer to the shoreline in order to fish, raise crops and graze livestock, but many also lived further back in less permanent structures. Many of the local residents in North Kohala today grew up on or near Kahua Ranch and would take the Old Pineapple Road down to Puakea Bay to fish or camp. Later on, and for many generations the land belonged to Parker Ranch - cattle were grazed on approximately 87,000 acres, all the way to Mile Marker 9 on the Akoni Pule Highway. Sometime around 1980, George Issacs facilitated a land swap with Parker Ranch - he was said to have traded land at Waiki'i Ranch for the land here at Puakea Bay Ranch. Issacs was the driving force behind the vision of what would become Puakea Bay Ranch, first obtaining the land from Parker Ranch. He then set up the Puakea Bay Ranch Partnership that applied first for the change in County zoning (from 20-acre lots to 10-acre lots) and which then sought County approval of the Puakea Bay Ranch subdivision. The Puakea Bay Ranch Homeowners Association was incorporated in December 1984.
